We couldn’t do it without you. We never really thought about whether or not we wanted to own a retail business. Our background was far from that. My husband and I worked in the high tech corporate world. When we first opened Natural Pawz in The Woodlands, Texas I would never have imagined that we would one day have 20 stores across the Houston and Austin areas.
It all started in 2001 when we adopted a cute 1 ½-year-old chocolate lab from the Houston SPCA, whom I named Callie. You know how sometimes things are meant to be? Well, she was definitely meant to be. I had recently received the news that my dad had cancer and it was devastating to me. The following Saturday, Biff suggested we go to the SPCA to check out the pets. We had discussed adopting but with our work schedules and travel, we thought it might not be a good idea. As we were pulling up to the Houston SPCA, I suddenly felt nauseous and we went home. The next morning, we drove back down to the SPCA on my promise to Biff that I would get out of the car this time. We looked at puppies and the adult dogs. That is when I saw Callie for the first time and I knew that it was fate. At 1 ½, Callie was 50 pounds and full of energy. Callie started developing allergies and used to itch, lick, scratch and was miserable. It seemed like we were going every 6 weeks to the vet for shots and it would come back even worse. It was then that I knew I had to find a solution. After a lot of research, I decided I would try to change her food and within 6 weeks, I had a different dog. Everyone we knew was amazed and wanted to know where they could find this food. Back in 2002, the natural pet foods were hard to find. With a passion for helping others, we started a weekend delivery service. Within 1 ½ years, we were delivering nights and weekends. I loved my corporate job but felt that I needed to help pet people. Thinking back, I didn’t know anything about retail but my mission was simple – help pets and pet parents and only carry best-in-class products. With this mission in mind, I have searched out to learn from experts – pet food experts, read lots of books, spoke to holistic vets and to natural product experts in the human and pet world. We all have busy lives so we try to do the homework and test every product before we carry them. We will never sell anything we would not give to our own “kids”.
In the beginning, when we would open a store, customers would tell us how they wished that there was a Natural Pawz near them.
Now, 20 stores later, we feel blessed to be a part of your lives. Thank you for supporting a local business. Your support creates jobs in your neighborhood and gives a voice to the pet product companies out there that you want products that put pets first. We go beyond the bag and select companies that run them with integrity and only source good healthy, natural ingredients.
Please let us know how we are doing. If we are doing things well or could make improvements, I want to hear from you!
