Life happens as we prepare for life to happen. Someone gets sick. A last minute vacation pops up. A new job requires relocation. A global pandemic forces everyone inside and makes us completely rethink how we live, work, eat and play. You know, things like that. So it pays to be prepared.
Our pets are a huge part of our life and family. If you need someone to take care of them for a short period of time for any reason, it’s smart to have everything they need to know down in one place.
We created a customizable Things My Human Knows manual that you can fill out, download and print and give to a caregiver so they can know everything you know about your pet in one easy-to-find place. We’ve also included a few additional things to think about below.

IDENTIFY A CAREGIVER
Figure out who your go-to person is ahead of time and make sure they are onboard. Give them any codes they need to get in the house or a spare set of keys.
HAVE A BACKUP
Always have a plan b person, just in case. This could even be a pet resource center or a shelter in times of extreme emergency. Be aware that human shelters are required to take in pets in areas where emergencies are declared.
HANG PET INSIDE STICKERS
In case emergency personnel need to get inside, let them know you have four-legged loved ones in the house by placing our “Pets Inside” stickers on your door or window. You can find them at any of our local stores.
STOCK UP ON ESSENTIALS
Always have a 2-3 week supply of food, medicine, supplements, treats and anything else your pet regularly needs on hand. Another alternative is to have an Autoship subscription which will arrive at your door without interruption.
KEEP THEIR ID CURRENT
Engraved ID tags are the fastest and easiest way to identify your pet. Or have your pet microchipped. If they already have the chip, contact the company to ensure everything is up to date and active. And always keep your ID tags current.
BUILD AN EMERGENCY KIT
Build a grab-and-go emergency kit in a small duffel. Include an extra leash and ID tags. Waste bags or litter. A toy. Five days of food and treats. Collapsible bowls. Blanket. Medicines and supplements. A list of contacts and a Things My Human Knows manual.
